Al-Sharaa to NY Times: Stabilizing Syria is a global necessity

In an extensive interview with The New York Times, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa stressed that any chaos within Syria would not only impact neighboring countries, but would also negatively impact regional and international stability as a whole. He emphasized that the stability of the new Syria has become a matter of concern for many regional and European countries following the fall of the ousted regime.

Al-Sharaa confirmed that his government has informed all international parties that any military presence on Syrian territory must be carried out in accordance with Syrian law, and that such a presence must not pose a threat to any neighboring or distant country through Syrian territory.

Regarding the military sphere, Shaara indicated that Syria has not yet received any offers from other countries to replace its military arsenal, most of which is Russian-made. He also explained that there are long-term agreements with Russia in the food and energy sectors, calling for these national interests to be taken into account.

On the economic front, the Syrian president called on Washington to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria, which were imposed in response to the former regime's practices. He noted that some US conditions for lifting the sanctions need to be discussed and amended to reflect the new reality in the country.

Regarding internal security, Al-Sharaa affirmed his government's commitment to maintaining peace, particularly in the Sahel region, and pledged to hold those responsible for acts of violence accountable. He added that "a few months are not enough to build a fully integrated army for a country the size of Syria," referring to the challenges the government faces in restructuring the military establishment in post-conflict circumstances.
