The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Sunday that the Damascus Countryside Security Directorate received a shipment of weapons and ammunition from residents of the towns of Sahnaya and Ashrafieh Sahnaya. This is part of a local agreement aimed at restricting weapons to the state and enhancing security and civil peace in the region.
SANA posted on its X account that the handover took place in coordination with dignitaries and residents of the two towns, a move the agency described as reflecting "the local community's keenness to support stability and thwart any attempts to sow chaos and division."
These developments come days after security tensions in the Ashrafieh Sahnaya and Jaramana areas of the Damascus countryside. This followed the spread of an audio recording insulting the Prophet Muhammad, attributed to a member of the Druze community. This audio recording sparked clashes and violence that resulted in civilian and security casualties.
In this context, the Syrian government announced that it had reached an agreement with the residents of Jaramana, stipulating the surrender of weapons and enhanced cooperation to maintain security. Meanwhile, the Druze Sheikhdom and community leaders affirmed that "members of the community are an integral part of a unified Syria" and rejected "all calls for partition or sectarian strife."
General Security forces were deployed on Saturday in the town of Ashrafieh Sahnaya as part of official efforts to impose stability throughout the region, amid government warnings of Israeli attempts to exploit sectarian tensions.
