Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced on Saturday his country's decision to reopen the Moroccan embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, after more than 12 years of closure.
The announcement came during Minister Bourita's speech at the 34th Arab League Summit held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where he emphasized that the decision reflects "Morocco's firm position in supporting the Syrian people in achieving their aspirations for security and stability and preserving the unity of their country."
Bourita noted that the reopening of the embassy comes within the framework of strengthening fraternal ties between the Moroccan and Syrian peoples, expressing his hope that it will contribute to deepening mutual cooperation and overcoming the effects of the estrangement that has lasted for more than a decade.
The Moroccan embassy in Damascus was closed in 2012 amid escalating events in Syria and the former regime's response to the protests that erupted against it.
