Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan Dr. Ayman Safadi held a joint press conference today at Tishreen Palace in Damascus, where they announced the signing of an agreement to establish a Higher Coordination Council between Syria and Jordan, with the aim of enhancing joint cooperation in various economic and development fields.
During the conference, Minister Al-Shaibani stated that this step is the culmination of significant diplomatic efforts, noting that Syria had achieved "the lifting of European sanctions days after the lifting of US sanctions," which he considered a fundamental shift that will positively impact the Syrian people and the region.
Al-Shaibani added, "Relations with Jordan are witnessing increasing prosperity, and the lifting of sanctions will contribute to developing cooperation in the fields of transportation, energy, and water."
Al-Shaibani also emphasized that the Israeli attacks on Syria threaten not only Syrian sovereignty, but the security of the entire region. He praised Jordan's position rejecting these attacks and called on the international community to pressure Israel to abide by the 1974 agreement.
For his part, Minister Safadi emphasized that his visit to Damascus came under the direct guidance of King Abdullah II, with the aim of building a complementary partnership between the two countries.
He explained that the meetings resulted in an agreement on a roadmap to activate cooperation in energy, transportation, water, health, and other areas.
Safadi said, "Syria is going through a critical phase, and Jordan will be a partner in supporting it toward stability." He noted that "whatever threatens Syria threatens Jordan," emphasizing the need to end all foreign interference in Syrian affairs.
He also congratulated the Syrian government on the lifting of sanctions, viewing it as an opportunity to improve basic services and enable the state to fulfill its duties toward its citizens.
