Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa discussed on Thursday with the head of the National Commission for Missing Persons, Mohammad Reza Jalkhi, ways to develop the commission's work, including forming a specialized advisory team and establishing a comprehensive national database for missing persons. This step was described as "practical and humanitarian," according to SANA.
The state-run agency reported that the meeting focused on reviewing the commission's work and the practical plans for forming the team, which will consist of experts and representatives of the families of missing persons and relevant authorities, as part of strengthening the institutional approach to this sensitive issue.
The meeting also addressed mechanisms for organizing documentation processes and providing moral and legal support for the families of missing persons. The importance of transparency and participation as a fundamental methodology for the commission's work was emphasized.
This move coincides with what Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh announced on June 3, stating that the number of missing persons in Syria is estimated at approximately 140,000, according to estimates by local and international human rights organizations.
