Firefighting teams and the Syrian Civil Defense are continuing their intensive efforts to control two dangerous fires in the northern Latakia countryside, eight days after the outbreak of fires that have devoured vast areas of forests and woodlands.
Ahmed Yaziji, director of the operations room and member of the board of directors of the Syrian Civil Defense, explained to SANA that the rugged terrain and steep slopes are among the most significant challenges hindering extinguishing operations, along with high temperatures and wind speeds that contribute to fueling the spread of the fires.
Yaziji added that teams are currently working to open new fire lines and pave roads to prevent the spread of the fires, with intensive field personnel deployed on all fronts to closely monitor the situation and contain it.
Yaziji praised the significant support provided by Turkey since the first hours of the outbreak of the fires, noting the dispatch of helicopters and jets, in addition to approximately 20 specialized vehicles and trained personnel, in coordination with the local operations room in the region.
These efforts come amid difficult field conditions, especially in mountainous areas and deep valleys, which further complicates the extinguishing mission and calls for increased coordination and technical support to effectively combat the spread of the fires.
