Syrian security seizes Kornet missiles near Lebanon border

Syrian security forces in the Qusayr border area with Lebanon seized a shipment of Kornet anti-tank missiles intended for smuggling on Saturday, the second such operation in two weeks.

The Ministry of Interior explained that the operation was the result of meticulous investigations and continuous monitoring of the sources of illicit weapons, and resulted in the confiscation of the shipment, which was transported on two motorcycles.

The Directorate is continuing investigations to identify all those involved, determine the sources of the weapons, and take deterrent legal action against them.

Arms Smuggling between Syria and Lebanon

The Syrian-Lebanese border areas, particularly in the Homs countryside and Qusayr, have been active crossing points for smuggling since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011. These crossings have been used to transport weapons, fighters, and smuggled materials in both directions.

Despite intensive security efforts on both the Syrian and Lebanese sides, attempts to smuggle weapons continue from time to time, whether to supply armed groups inside Lebanon or for the illicit arms trade.

The latest operation in Qusayr is expected to help tighten the noose on smuggling networks and thwart similar attempts in the future.
