Activists say 840 Hezbollah fighters killed in Syria since 2011

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Activists reported sporadic clashes on the 'disputed' Qalamoun Mountains between Syrian rebels and fighters of Lebanese militia Hezbollah, saying on Wednesday bodies of 6 Shiite militants were delivered to their families in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah had lost many fighters over the past few weeks during the clashes in Syria's Qalamoun Mountains.

Lebanese media mocked Hezbollah’s humiliating defeats inflected by Syria’s al-Qaeda wing Nusra Front after storming their base in Lebanese Brital village, leaving 18 fighters dead and documenting the ‘raid’ in a video posted online.

Activists said Hezbollah had lost 840 fighters in Syrian war amid a severe blackout by the ‘Islamic Resistance’ leadership to keep fighters' morale high.

Syria's war has been the battleground for a struggle between groups supported by Sunni Muslim states including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and Bashar al-Assad's regime which is backed by Shi'ite Iran, according to Reuters.

The conflict began with pro-democracy protests in 2011 and rapidly descended into sectarian war in which more than 191,000 people have been killed.
