Syria arrests Ali Kayali, main suspect in 2013 Baniyas massacre

Damascus, Oct. 15 (SANA) The Syrian General Intelligence Service has arrested Ali Kayali, also known as “Mihrac Ural,” the main suspect in the 2013 Baniyas massacre, as he attempted to flee across the border.

On Oct. 4, the Internal Security Forces announced that the Counterterrorism Department had arrested Jamal Trabulsi, identified as deputy to Ali Kayali, also known as “Mihrac Ural.”

The arrest comes against the backdrop of the May 2013 al-Bayda massacre in the Baniyas countryside, one of the bloodiest massacres during the years of the Syrian revolution and one of the most painful episodes in survivors’ memories.

According to human rights reports and survivors’ testimonies, a large-scale military operation in al-Bayda left 264 civilians dead, including women and children, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.
