Idlib: Christian Priest entrusts Muslim man to protect Mary Virgin Church

In a remarkable incident, Priest Ibrahim Farah, Head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Idlib, has entrusted a Muslim man to take care of the church as he flees the captured city.

Zelal Badie al-Moallem, former member of Syria's national team for volleyball, told Zaman al-Wasl that Priest Farah gave him the keys of of the Virgin Mary church in Idlib city before his leaving.

"I've been entrusted by Father Farah with the task of keeping the church safely," al-Moallem said.

Al-Moallem, who works in relief and aid, said 'Father Farah ' is a symbol of coexistence and loveliness. His step reflects his trust in rebels.

Syria's Islamist rebels, who captured northern city of Idlib late of March have made number of procedures to secure civilians, including the Christian community in the captured city.

Fatah Army, an alliance of Islamist groups, has formed a security committee consists of all rebel factions who participated in liberating the city as Nusra Front, Jund al-Aqsa, Jaish al-Sunnah, al-Sham Legion and Suqour al-Sham.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter said number of Christian families have refused to flee the city despite the deteriorating situation due to the daily aerial bombardment by Syrian regime air force.

The capture of Idlib marked only the second time since the start of the Syrian conflict that the government had lost control of a provincial capital. The first was Raqqa, which the Islamic State group has turned into its de facto capital.
