Clashes intensify between ISIS, US-backed forces in Deir Ezzor

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Clashes on Monday intensified between Daesh and the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in the remaining pockets in eastern Deir Ezzor province after the fail of a deal evacuates ISIS militants from al-Sheitat region to the Iraqi border, local activists said.

Journalist Ibrahim al-Hassan from Euphrates (Furat) post, local media unit, said negotiations had been failed to evacuate trapped ISIS fighters with their families from the town of Gharanij to al-Hajin town in the eastern bank of Euphrates River.

The Kurdish-led forces seized control of 80% of Gharanij town.

The deal also demanded the SDF to allow ISIS members to reach the Iraqi border.

The SDF, which declared victory in its assault in Deir Ezzor, still face resistance by ISIS fighters who still control an array of villages east of the Euphrates river that bisects the oil-rich province.

Over the week, SDF fighters backed by the International coalition have seized control of 13 villages from ISIS.

The Assad army and SDF have pushed Islamic State from much of the country’s north and east. The borders of ISIS has shrinked in Syria and Iraq to be a small pockets after fall of Raqqa, the de facto capital, Deir Ezzor and Albu Kamal.
