Tunisia, Syria FMs meet for first time since 2012

Tunisian Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi has met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, the Tunisian Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

Jerandi and Mekdad reviewed bilateral relations, the recent developments in Syria, and the path to a political settlement for the crisis, the statement explained.

This is the first public meeting between the foreign ministers in nearly nine years.

Tunisia was the first Arab country to sever diplomatic relations with Syria in February 20212 over the Syrian regime's excessive use of violence to suppress anti-regime protesters.

Two months ago, the Tunisian General Labour Union called in a letter addressed to President Kais Saied to restore diplomatic relations with Damascus.
