Two Syrian children killed in kitchen explosion in Gaziantep

Two Syrian children were killed in an explosion in the kitchen of a house in the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep, the Turkish DHA agency said Monday.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown in the house in which a Syrian family lives in the Sakarya neighborhood of Shahin Bey district.

The two children who were injured in the explosion were taken to the hospital, where they died, and police teams opened an investigation into the causes of the explosion.

Recently, there has been an increase in cases of Syrian refugee homes burning in Turkey for reasons related to the electrical appliances used.

Last December, 3 Syrian children died, after their house was exposed to a fire in the state of Marash in central Turkey. Turkish media said at the time that the three brothers lost their lives due to poisoning by smoke from a fire that erupted inside their house located in the "Ahmed Bozdag" neighborhood in Kahramanmaras.

Last January, two Syrian children died as a result of a fire that broke out in their family home in the southern Turkish state of Gaziantep. Activists said that the incident occurred in the "Kahveli Banar" neighborhood in the Şahinbey region.

Turkey shelters over 3.6 million Syrians and is the world's largest refugee-hosting country, according to HRW.

The Syrian conflict - which led to the loss of at least 500,000 lives and displaced more than 13,2 million people -  began in 2011 after the Assad regime brutally cracked down on peaceful pro-democracy protests.
