Internal security forces arrested Major General Wajih Ali al-Abdullah, the former director of the Presidential Office for Military Affairs in the ousted regime, in an operation coordinated by the Counter-Terrorism Directorate to pursue members of the inner circle of the former regime's head.
Al-Abdullah held his position for 13 years (2005-2018), during which he was responsible for signing lists referring defectors to military field courts, under direct authorization from Bashar al-Assad, particularly during the height of the Syrian revolution.
One Signature for Dozens
Images of documents obtained by Zaman al-Wasl prove that al-Abdullah's signatures in June 2012, in his capacity as director of the office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, led to the referral of dozens of military personnel to the field court in a single day, a process associated with death sentences.
The documents reveal the workings of the "death machine" that reduced thousands of defectors to mere "numbers" through expedited referral orders, on fabricated charges including "demonstrating," "acts of sabotage," and "terrorist crimes."
