(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 179 regime soldiers killed last August by the Islamic State in the Syrian desert, according to pro-regime news sites.

The Assad army and its allies made advances in the central Syrian desert, also known as Badia since May. Such an advance left hundreds of troops and allied militants dead as the radical group showed fierce resistance, depending on its deadly suicide bombing attacks.

August's death toll included 28 officers and 36 members from Qalamoun Shield militia killed near Salamiya town.

The army and its allies had taken a number of villages northeastern Homs province, encircling the Islamic State fighters to their west in an area of land around 8,000 km square, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
