(Zaman Al Wasl)- An opposition figure revealed that Iyad al-Ghareeb, the second Syrian ex-intelligence officer arrested in Germany on Tuesday, had showed loyalty to the Syrian revolution since 2011.
Akram al-Assaf, member of the opposition’s National Coalition, said al-Ghareeb had saved many lives of Syrian activists as well as he helped detainees held by the regime security services before his defection in October 2011.
Al-Ghareeb, 42, was arrested with Colonel Anwar raslan, 52, one more ex-officer on charges of carrying out or aiding in crimes against humanity, including torture of anti-regime activists.
According to NPR, the apprehensions follow years of investigation launched by the Berlin-based European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, and included testimony from six alleged torture survivors.
Al-Ghareeb was a commissioned officer in the Studies department in the Branch 40, which led by Maj. Gen. Hafez Makhlouf, Bashar al-Assad’s cousin.
Al-Ghareeb was so eager to hold the criminals of Syria's Intelligence accountable. He showed full ability to collaborate with the German authorities over his service in the in the security services, the source said.
Al-Ghareen who was born in Al-Muhassan town in eastern Syria was under tight scrutiny over his pro-democracy stance.
Makhlouf accused al-Ghareeb of leaking the names of wanted people, according to al-Assaf.

The father of six had defected the notorious intelligence department in October 2011.
Only a year ago, his family arrived in Germany after a bitter displacement journey from Deir Ezzor province through Turkey and Greece.
Since Syria's conflict erupted in 2011, more than 560,000 people have been killed, more than 11 million have fled their homes and medical infrastructure has been systematically targeted.
