Initial rehabilitation work has officially commenced at Mezzeh Airport, paving the way for its gradual transition from a military facility into a limited-use civil airport dedicated to private and executive aviation, thereby serving as a vital facility complementing Damascus International Airport.
In a statement, the Syrian General Establishment of Civil Aviation explained that the current phase involves debris removal and the rehabilitation of air navigation infrastructure components. This is proceeding alongside the fulfillment of the technical, operational, and regulatory requirements necessary to reclassify the airport and prepare it for civil use.
The Authority added that the work is being carried out in coordination with relevant national institutions and in cooperation with the National Commission for Missing Persons. Due care is being taken regarding sites suspected of containing mass graves or human remains, with such sites being handled according to established protocols and procedures to preserve evidence and remains while upholding the rights and dignity of the victims.
The project is part of a broader plan to develop Syria’s civil aviation sector, running parallel to the completion of technical, operational, environmental, and regulatory studies, while taking into account the nature of the surrounding area and projected air traffic volume.
